What are the best Apps on the Android G1 as of today (05/15/2009)?

Bob asked:

I just bought a G1 today and am wondering what are the coolest and best apps for it. I googled and just found the best apps as of October last year, but nothing of recent.
I’m looking for the apps that really show off the G1. Because so far all I’ve got are pretty basic things, like flixster and weatherbug.

Also, what is cupcake and when is it available?

  1. Android Cupcake

From my own tampering, and lots of Trial and Error, ABSOLUTE MUST HAVES:

SMS Popup – Get it, must have, but remember to disable your default messaging app notifications, and enable the ones in this app instead.

Power Meter – If you want your battery to last. Spend the 99cents.

Steel – Better than the default browser, probably can be thrown out once you get the OS update.

Useful Switches – turn everything on and off without going into 12 different screens.

K-9 – Best email app for all the external mail (yahoo, msn, etc). Actually allows you to delete/move files around.

Where – Find restaurants, businesses, anything, based on your location.

Backgrounds – lets you easily search pictures and add them in as wallpaper.

PicSay – Excellent for editing pics.

Moviefinder – get movies based on your location, quick and very useful better than the movie information found in Where.

    Optional, but very good:

MyAccount – view account information directly from Tmobile.

Package Tracking – UPS, FedEx, etc etc..

Pkt Auctions eBay – If you use ebay a lot, much faster than using the web.

ShopSavvy – comparison shop simply by barcode scanning merchandise.

The Weather Channel – The best weather app, hands down.

Clock Apps – Good for a countdown timer alarm. (like taking a lunch break at work, for example).

Astro – File management – you will need it eventually.

As for Cupcake, Cupcake is the next OS update which will begin to be sent out OTA(Over-the-Air) by Tmobile as of today, 5/15/09, if I’m not mistaken.. It will add a touch based kb, speed up the default browser, and several other updates..

for great cupcake info and all things G1, try out :
